Math War Game – Part Two – Free Math Tutoring Video

This free math tutoring video introduces two more game suggestions for practicing mental addition or subtraction. This is the more advanced version so be sure to do the games in the previous video for a while before starting these games.

If you haven’t seen them, check out my other videos in Mental Math. They explain how to teach this method of addition and subtraction using manipulatives, such as Cuisenaire Rods or an abacus.

The idea for this game came from the Singapore (Primary Mathematics) math curriculum. It’s a great choice if you’re looking for one that will develop number sense and mental math skills!

How Crazy Can You Make It?!? Game – Part One – Free Math Tutoring Video

The activity in this free math tutoring video comes from the Miquon math curriculum. It’s a great way for kids to consolidate their knowledge of our number system, to think critically, and expand their understanding of numbers. Encourage your kids to be as creative (or CRAZY) as possible when they do this. Creating more complex problems will develop their math skills tremendously!

This would also be a good activity to do in small groups so the children can have discussion about their ideas and learn from each other.

Making Tens and 100 Game – Free Math Tutoring Video

It is helpful to have either two small group sets of Cuisenaire Rods or else one set and a set of Base Ten Rods, too, when playing the game in this free math tutoring video. This would also be a good game to play with kids who are different ability levels – one could figure out the number bonds of ten and the other could add up each person’s score each turn.
